Adding a Second Income Stream to Your Physio Practice

A physio's income is tied to hours in the room. That has a ceiling, and it stops completely when you are sick or on leave. A second income stream can raise the ceiling and smooth the bumps. But every extra stream takes time, and some never pay back. The trick is to choose one that fits the work you already do.

Options that build on clinical work

Choose with three questions

  1. Does it use what I am already good at? A sports physio teaching running technique has a head start.
  2. Who will pay, and do I already reach them? Your existing patients and referrers are the easiest audience.
  3. How much time before it pays? Classes can pay in weeks; an online course can take a year.

Test before you build

Run one workshop before building a whole course. Do one workplace talk before printing brochures. If people pay for the small version, build the bigger one.

Keep the clinical standard

Anything with your name and profession on it reflects on your registration. Advice online must still be safe and appropriate. In Australia, advertising regulated health services must follow the National Law, including the ban on testimonials.

Keep the books separate

Track each stream's income and time separately, so you know which ones actually pay. A stream that earns money but eats your evenings may not be worth it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the easiest second income for a physio?

Usually group classes or paid telehealth reviews, because they use skills and patients you already have.

Can physiotherapists make money online?

Yes, through telehealth, programs, teaching and consulting, but it takes time to build and needs the same professional care as clinical work.

Will a second stream take away from my clinic?

It can if it eats your time. Start small, measure it, and drop it if it does not pay.
