Home Physiotherapy for Elderly Patients and Aged Care

For many older adults, getting to a clinic is the hardest part of physiotherapy. Home physio removes that barrier and lets you see how they really live: the stairs, the rug, the bathroom. It is some of the most valuable work a physio can do, and demand keeps growing.

What home physio offers older adults

  • Falls prevention: strength, balance and a safer home.
  • Recovery after hospital or surgery, in their own environment.
  • Keeping independent: getting up from a chair, walking outside, managing stairs.
  • Managing long-term conditions like arthritis and Parkinson's.

Assess the home, not just the person

Look at lighting, rugs, steps, the shower and the bed height. Small changes often prevent a fall. Recommend equipment and, when needed, an occupational therapy referral.

Work with families and carers

Explain exercises to the family or carer, with simple written instructions in large print. Keep the patient's consent at the centre: they decide what is shared. Record a contact number for a family member. See home visits.

Funding

Older patients may have Medicare chronic condition visits through their GP, private health cover, DVA cover or government aged care funding that includes allied health. What is covered and how to claim varies, so check each patient's arrangement.

Group options

Some older patients do well in a falls prevention class once they are steady. See group classes.

Watch for safety

Look out for signs of a patient not coping, neglect or abuse, and know your obligations. See home visit safety.

Build referrals

GPs, hospitals, aged care providers and community nurses all refer older adults. See getting home visit referrals.

Frequently asked questions

Who pays for home physio for older adults?

It may be the patient, private health, a GP chronic condition plan, DVA, or aged care funding, depending on their situation.

How often should elderly patients have home physio?

It depends on their goals and condition, often weekly at first, then less often with a home program.
